Tip: Fellowes Powershred DS-500C :: Fix when won’t shred

This post explains how I fixed my Fellowes Powershred DS-500C when it stopped shredding – it would go in reverse but not forward. I’m writing the post because I couldn’t find any specific online help about this model!

I bought this consumer shredder from Officeworks in 2012. I’m not sure whether it has other model numbers but there was no mention of it on the Fellowes Australian or US sites. But Fellowes Australia Customer Service were helpful.

In my case the problem was easily diagnosed as something blocking the sensor that triggers the shredder.

According to Fellowes this was probably a blocked Activator.

What’s the Activator?

In the DS-500C the Activator is little white switch inside the top of the shredder. It was more or less centred and about 2cm inside the top of the shredder. When paper hits the Activator it is pushed out of the way and the shredder starts shredding.

To fix this problem we needed to remove whatever was stopping the Activator from retracting.

First we tried putting the shredder into reverse, then forward, then reverse … no change, the Activator was still not retracting.

Next attempt was to power-off the shredder and use a paper-clip to clear the obstruction. The paper clip was able to move some paper from around the Activator, but going in the same plane as the shredder opening didn’t fix the problem.

However when I put a little bend in the end of the paper-clip I was able to clear something from behind the Activator … there was something blocking the spring-load mechanism and the kink in the paperclip gave me access to that area.

The shredder is now working!

(as an aside Fellowes had told me to take the shredder back to Officeworks for a replacement if the paperclip trick didn’t work).

  8. Thanks for this, solved exactly my problem! Heard it running in reverse although no movement and no sound or movement in regular mode. Very backed up paper caused the Activator to be blocked.

  10. Thank you for sharing your tip. I was ready to throw the blooming shredder away, but the bendy paper clip thing worked immediately.
