Cricket Scoring App

I’m not a big cricket fan. I like listening to the ABC radio commentary: it is “the sound of summer”, but that’s about it.

But I have some friends who are into cricket. They play, they watch, they listen. All good.

And they have kids who play cricket. Which means they taxi, they watch, they umpire and they score.

And this is where the idea comes. The scoring for their kids’ cricket is done with paper and pencil. Like it’s been done forever. Manually. Painfully. Even better, after the game the scoring is then transcribed into a database so that the little-ies can analyse their games. Can you think of anything worse than transcribing that stuff?

So I suggested that they need an iPhone app to replace the paper.

Step One: search the iTunes store to see if someone else has already created the app.

It appears they have. It’s called Ouzzat! and sells for $1.19 in the Australian iTunes store.

A look at the icon made me nervous.


Then the screenshot. Yep, a single screenshot only. It’s a doozie.


IMO this is not an app that would be a threat. Design? Features?

Step 2: consider the business model.

This is where the story ends. It may also explain the quality of Ouzzat! There is no business model for a standalone iPhone cricket scoring app. Especially not at $1.19.

A cricket scoring app is not going to sell enough copies to pay for the coding. Even if it’s the most beautiful app in the world the market is just too small. Not even 100% penetration would generate enough revenue.

Let’s say you sell the app for $1.19.

Let’s say all of the 500,000 Australians that Cricket Australia reckons participate (2003-4, source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket_in_Australia) are members of a cricket club and each club has 100 members … so there’s 5,000 clubs in Australia. This seems about right since the internet also tells me that there are 8-10,000 clubs in the UK (http://www.ecb.co.uk/twelfthman/interactive/q-and-a/2848,2848,QA.html).

Let’s say every cricket club has 10 scorers.

Let’s also say Australia is 10% of the market (my guestimate).

So potential revenue = $10 x 5,000 clubs x 10 copies x 10 global = $600K

That’s $600K global potential … it just ain’t enough.

Are there alternatives?

I’m not pursuing this idea (hence the post). But if I was a company that made cricket scoring software for computers then I’d consider adding an iPhone app. I’d sell it for a price that makes it worthwhile to not bother taking a laptop (how hard is that anyway?). And I’d provide direct integration with the software so that analysis was only available to users who’d bought the full version of the software.

But I’m not pursuing the idea.
